GLOBAL WOMEN'S BREAKFAST CELEBRATION 2024

International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) invited all science organizations and institutions across the world to be part of global women breakfast on the 27th of February 2024 under the theme; “Catalyzing Diversity in Science”.

The program aimed to celebrate accomplishments of women in all science disciplines and to inspire younger generation to pursue careers in science. This was held in conjunction with the UN day of women and girls in science to establish an active network of both women and men to overcome the barriers to gender equality in science. WiSTEMGh celebrated this memorable day by organizing an exhibition dubbed STEM APPLICATION FAIR which was specifically geared towards women in STEM under the major theme, ‘Catalyzing Diversity in Science – Whipping the interest of first cycle people of basic school’.WiSTEMGh celebrated this day with Junior High School students around KNUST environs as well as senior members of the university. The opening of the program took place at the college of science auditorium(Allotey Auditorium) whilst the exhibition and excursion took place at physics laboratories(optics and geophysics labs) and animal science farm respectively. Participated schools:

1. Deduako M/A JHS

2. Ayeduase R/C JHS

3. Wilson Adventist JHS

4. KNUST Basic Schools

Activities:

1. Experiments in Physics: Students were exposed to captivating physics experiments such as Polarization of light, Fiber Optics, Composition of Light in showcasing fundamental principles and demonstrating the real-world applications of physics in an interactive and informative manner.

2. Robotics Showcase: The event featured a robotics demonstration, allowing students to witness the potential of robotics in various industries and encouraging them to explore the exciting field of robotics and automation.

3. Excursion at Animal Science Department Farm: Participants had the opportunity to visit the Animal Science Department farm, where they learned about types of animals animal husbandry practices, agricultural technology, and the importance of sustainable farming methods.

Climax Feature

1.Hands-on Learning: The students actively engaged in hands-on activities, fostering a practical understanding of scientific concepts and technology.

2. Inspiration: By witnessing experiments and demonstrations, the students were inspired to consider careers in STEM fields and pursue their passions in science and technology.

3. Exploration: The excursion to the Animal Science Department farm allowed students to explore agricultural science and gain insights into the importance of agriculture in society.

Impact:

1. Knowledge Enhancement: The event broadened the students' knowledge in physics, robotics, and agricultural science, encouraging them to develop a keen interest in STEM subjects.

2. Empowerment: Through exposure to STEM activities, the students were empowered to break gender stereotypes and consider future opportunities in science and technology.

3. Community Engagement: The collaboration with junior high schools promoted community engagement and highlighted the importance of promoting gender equality in STEM education.

Conclusion:

The Global Women’s Breakfast Celebration organized by WiSTEMGh was a resounding success, promoting STEM education, inspiring the younger generation to pursue careers in science and technology, and fostering a supportive environment for female participation in STEM fields. The event served as a stepping stone towards a more inclusive and diverse future in STEM.
