WiSTEMGh and Multimedia - Luv FM Collaborate to Celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024 at Manso Adubia, Amansie South District on May 28, 2024. This collaboration aimed to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene and support young girls in the community with essential menstrual products. It also sought to reduce the incidence of teenage pregnancies by educating young girls and teenagers on personal hygiene during their menstrual cycle and dispelling myths surrounding menstruation.
The event was honored by the presence of the Gyaasehene of Manso-Adubia, Nana Adusei Kwadampim II, who served as Chairperson. Participating schools included Akyerebikrom Kensere M/A Primary School, Adubia D/A Basic School, and Manso Adubia Senior High Technical School.
WiSTEMGh KNUST as part of the program had a mentorship session on several important topics. These included menstrual hygiene, personal hygiene, responsible use of social media, staying focused on their studies, and the importance of abstaining from teenage pregnancy to prevent contracting STDs. To make the session more interactive, the volunteers incorporated group discussions. The students were divided into small groups, each facilitated by two WiSTEMGh volunteers, to discuss their thoughts and experiences openly. This approach fostered a sense of community and support among the girls, helping them feel more comfortable talking about menstrual health.
Host of Luv in the Morning, Mr. David Akuetteh, explained the motive behind the gesture. To support this cause, Luv FM, in collaboration with WiSTEMGh, donated 1,130 EcoPeriod reusable sanitary pads, 600-period panties, 10 boxes of disposable pads, 100 bathing pails and a box of Blackman soap. Mr. David Akwertey highlighted that these contributions were made possible by the generosity of radio listeners who wanted to help these girls lead meaningful lives. He encouraged the girls to avoid pregnancy and live responsibly.
The CEO of Eco-Me Africa, Amdiya Abdul Latiff, educated the students about the female reproductive system and demonstrated the proper use and care of reusable pads. She also provided an opportunity for the girls to ask questions and share their experiences regarding menstrual hygiene and the use of reusable pads.
The District Chief Executive for the Amansie South District, Hon. Clement Opoku Gyamfi pledged to initiate a pad bank in the district to bridge the period poverty gap in the community. He believes “the project will improve the accessibility of sanitary pads for needy girls” He urged the community to contribute whatever they can to ensure the success of this vital initiative.
The Gyaasehene, in his closing remarks, praised the collaborative efforts of WiSTEMGh and Luv FM, and expressed his pride in the students’ enthusiastic participation. He emphasized the importance of supporting young girls and committed to continuing to advocate for menstrual health initiatives in Manso Adubia.
