WiSTEMGh and MasterCard Foundation Organized Two-Day Mentorship Workshop to Strengthen Leadership and Career Growth

WiSTEM Ghana, in partnership with the MasterCard Foundation, successfully hosted a two-day Mentorship Workshop focused on enhancing interactive and educational capabilities among mentors and mentees. The workshop, themed “Strategies to Win at Both Life and Career,” took place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 27 and 28 at the Golden Bean Hotel.

The seminar was led by Mrs. Millicent Clarke, a seasoned leadership coach, member of the International Coaching Federation (ICF), and former Regional Head of Human Resources for Standard Chartered Bank in the Middle East. Through engaging case studies, lively debates, and brainteasers, Mrs. Clarke encouraged participants to reflect critically on the concept of legacy and the role of mentoring in shaping successful lives and careers.

Workshop Goals

The workshop aimed to:

  • Provide guidance on achieving success in both personal and professional spheres.
  • Enhance mentoring techniques through shared experiences.
  • Examine and restructure the existing WiSTEMGh Mentorship Initiative.
  • Foster a legacy-driven mindset among participants.

Key Highlights

The first day began with engaging icebreaker activities and a ‘three-minute test’ that encouraged active participation and interaction among attendees.

One of the key concepts introduced was the “Business of One,” which supports the development of individual networks including coaches, sponsors, and mentors. Mrs. Clarke also clarified the often-misunderstood distinctions between sponsorship, coaching, and mentoring.

Day two of the workshop delved deeper into the purpose and value of mentoring. Participants engaged in reflective discussions about mutual development and explored the qualities of exceptional mentors, such as emotional intelligence, empathy, and adaptability. There was a peer mentoring session in which participants practiced how they would coach others. Attendees also shared personal stories and successes from the WiSTEMGh-MasterCard Mentorship Program, providing powerful testimonies of the program’s impact.

Some participants engaged in peer mentoring and group discussions.

A major outcome of the workshop was the proposal and establishment of a new initiative aimed at reforming the mentorship program to better serve both mentors and mentees.

The workshop concluded with participants feeling empowered and equipped with new tools and perspectives, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of mentorship and leadership within the WiSTEMGh community.
