WiSTEMGh Held a Menstrual Care Outreach at Kotei R/C JHS Ahead of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025
In anticipation of International Menstrual Hygiene Day, WiSTEMGh, in collaboration with SCISA Women’s Commissioner and Women in Science (WISe) KNUST, held an outreach at the Kotei R/C Junior High School on Monday, 26th May 2025 with the theme "Breaking the Stigma, Empowering Girls". The initiative aimed to educate students, promote menstrual hygiene, and challenge the cultural stigma surrounding menstruation.
The event opened with a welcome from the headmistress, Mrs. Vida Akosua Tudzi, followed by remarks from Prof. Mrs. Mercy Badu, General Secretary of WiSTEMGh. A series of interactive and educational sessions ensued, addressing menstrual science, hygiene, emotional well-being, and stigma.

Miss Jessica Asamoah, a teaching assistant from the Department of Theoretical and Applied Biology, led a session demystifying menstruation as a natural hormonal process. She shared personal insights, debunked myths, and encouraged openness among both girls and boys.

Miss Yvette Yayra Mensah, a National Service Personnel with WiSTEMGh, provided an in-depth explanation of the menstrual cycle and its phases. She also facilitated a practical demonstration on proper sanitary pad use and disposal, while emphasizing the importance of hygiene and body awareness.

Rev. Mrs. Bernice Peasah, Head of the counseling unit at the College of Science, addressed the psychological effects of menstruation, highlighting the need to tackle societal stigma and promote self-esteem. She encouraged inclusive conversations and safe spaces for support.

Miss Juliana Adjei, SCISA Women’s Commissioner, concluded with a holistic wellness session on managing menstrual health. She discussed common issues such as cramps and heavy bleeding, recommended safe remedies and lifestyle practices, and stressed the need for proper care and education.

As a practical support measure, the leadership of WiSTEMGh, presented sanitary pads, tissues, and hand sanitizers to the headmistress, symbolizing ongoing commitment to menstrual hygiene support at Kotei R/C JHS.

The Menstrual Care Program at Kotei R/C Junior High School underscored that menstruation is a natural process deserving of respect and dignity. Through inclusive education, safe dialogue, and the provision of essential menstrual supplies, the program empowered students and fostered a stigma-free, supportive environment. This initiative represents a significant step toward ensuring no girl is left behind because of her period.
